Northside's teachers and administrators have been trained to use SchoolNet to disaggregate test scores, focus on the specific areas where students are struggling, and generate individualized action plans. Implementation and rollout of the Curriculum Management System was an evolutionary process from an initial training structure by module to a current state where end-users access all data, course sections, and published reports in one convenient location.

The Classroom-Focused Improvement Process (CFIP)

As schools across the country have become more data driven and accountability oriented, many have struggled to make the school improvement plan (SIP) more effective in driving teaching and learning to higher levels, frequently with disappointing results. This session will present a model that differentiates between improving the school's performance as a whole, which is the primary focus of the SIP, and improving teaching and learning at the classroom level, which is the primary focus of the grade-level or department-level team. An interactive case study will be presented describing the impact of CFIP in overcoming the challenges of turning around a failing middle school. The session will also provide an introduction to the Data Coach training process that prepares instructional leadership teams to develop their entire faculty as high-performing, data-driven learning communities.

We will examine the specifics of a school implementation including the three-tiered model, selecting the appropriate research based interventions and developing the problem solving process in the Plan-Do-Study-Act format. We will explore the most effective and efficient way to examine the relevant data, using our EASy (Schoolnet) System, schedule appropriate interventions within the normal school day, while keeping all stakeholders, especially parents, as an integral part of this process. Participants will engage in authentic dialogue with other colleagues about how to integrate RtI into their current system.

The case study will demonstrate to educators at schools sites and at the district office how data inquiry has improved educational planning and student performance in the Inglewood Unified School District. For years, there had been a lack of professional development and collaboration on effective data analysis. The development of data teams, training into data inquiry, and the use of an effective data management system have been a catalyst for positive change. The incorporation of professional learning communities has only been operative because of the focus on and availability of student and teacher data. Although there have been some bumps in the road along the way, such as naysayers and the lack of data analysis and technology training, the process has moved forward due to continuous professional development of key players.

The Classroom Focused Improvement Plan (CFIP), developed by Dr. Mike Hickey, which was first introduced in September 2007 to the staff of IS 237 in Queens, New York, provided these teachers with a mechanism for the discussion, and analyzing of standardized test data, enabling them to better plan their instruction. This case study will outline the introduction of this new protocol, the issues, problems, and strengths encountered by the Teachers and Administrative Staff of IS 237, and provide the participants with an overview to the development of the CFIP at IS 237 over the course of the school year.

Who knows an educator who has not "youtubed" Did you Know?, and left the site wondering if the sun is setting on America just as it did on the British Empire by 1910? Why do some think the real issue isn't globalization at all, but rather the mass production traditions still used in most American classrooms?
